Off to Southern California

Last Friday morning we left early for the long drive down to Southern California. We had a fun weekend planned with visits to Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland.

The girls slept for the first four hours of the drive – surprise! When we arrived in Valencia we stopped for lunch. It was good timing as there was an accident on the freeway near the restaurant we ate at and traffic backed up for several miles in both directions. Welcome to Southern California!

After lunch we drove another 45 minutes or so to Bel Air and Beverly Hills. We showed the girls some of the big houses up in the hills and took a walk up and down Rodeo Drive. We didn’t recognize anyone famous on our walk. It’s hard to believe our economy is in the dumps based on all the people carrying bags from Saks, Tiffany and all the other expensive shops.

We made our way out towards Hollywood where we parked and walked around Hollywood Boulevard to look through the shops and see if we could find any stars that the girls had heard of. As it turned out, Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio were the only stars they knew of besides Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Snow White and Winnie the Pooh. Everyone else was a complete stranger to them.

For dinner we went down to Pink’s. If you like hot dogs this is the place to go when you’re in LA. The line outside can stretch for an hour or so depending on the time of day. We stopped by at 6:00pm on a Friday and the line was only 45 minutes long. The girls were amazed at all the different options, but didn’t feel adventurous enough to order more than just a plain dog with ketchup. They said they’d try something different the next time.

After a few hours of wandering around Hollywood we decided to head to our hotel and get some rest. We had a long day ahead of us at Universal Studios Hollywood.
